How to Burn a Candle Properly
(Yes, There Is a Right Way!)
When we talk to our customers, we often hear the same thing:
"Surely you just light a candle… don’t you?"
Well, yes — technically you do. But if you want your candle to burn beautifully, last longer, and smell exactly the way it was designed to, there are a few simple things that make a big difference.
You’d be surprised how many candles end up tunnelling, smoking, or burning unevenly simply because a few small steps were missed. The good news is that proper candle care is very easy.
Here are our top tips for getting the most out of your candle.
Trim the Wick Before Each Burn
Before lighting your candle, always trim the wick to around ¼ inch (about 5–6mm).
This helps to:
Prevent excessive smoke
Keep the flame at a steady size
Reduce soot forming on the jar
Ensure a clean, even burn
A wick that’s too long can create a large flame, which causes the candle to burn too quickly and unevenly.
Let the Wax Melt All the Way Across
One of the most common candle problems is tunnelling — when the candle burns straight down the middle and leaves a ring of unused wax around the edges.
To prevent this, allow the candle to burn long enough for the wax to melt evenly across the entire surface during the first burn. This usually takes 2–3 hours depending on candle size.
Once the candle forms a full melt pool the first time, it will usually continue burning evenly for the rest of its life.
Burn Candles in a Safe Location
Make sure your candle is:
Placed on a heat-resistant surface
Away from drafts such as open windows or fans
Clear of curtains or flammable materials
Out of reach of pets and children
Drafts can cause uneven burning and flickering, which can lead to smoke or soot.
Store Your Candles Properly
Proper storage helps keep your candle looking and smelling its best.
We recommend keeping candles:
Out of direct sunlight
Away from extreme temperatures
Covered with a lid if possible
Sunlight and heat can fade colours and weaken fragrance oils over time.
Extinguish the Candle Carefully
When you’re ready to put your candle out, use a candle snuffer or gently blow out the flame.
This helps prevent:
Hot wax splattering
Wick damage
Smoke lingering in the air
A well-maintained wick will relight much more easily the next time you use your candle.
A Little Care Makes a Big Difference
So yes — lighting a candle is simple. But burning a candle well makes all the difference.
With just a little care, your candle will:
Burn more evenly
Last longer
Smell stronger
And look beautiful while doing it
A well-burned candle really is a lovely thing.
