Behind the Scent: How We Create Fragrances Inspired by the Welsh Coast.
At Tenby Candle Co. every fragrance begins long before it becomes a candle. It starts on the coastline—where sea air meets golden sands, pine-covered dunes, and ever-changing tides. The Welsh coast isn’t just our inspiration; it’s the heart of everything we create.
It Starts With a Walk
Most of our scent ideas begin outdoors. A walk along the Pembrokeshire coast isn’t just scenery—it’s sensory immersion.
The freshness of sea air carried in from the Atlantic.
The softness of sand underfoot.
The soft movement of dunes shaped by the wind.
And the feeling of discovering somewhere that feels untouched.
These moments become the foundation of our fragrances.
Translating Nature Into Fragrance
Creating a scent inspired by place is never about imitation—it’s about interpretation.
We’re not trying to bottle the sea or the landscape exactly as they are. Instead, we capture the feeling they leave behind.
Every fragrance is built in three layers:
Top notes capture the first impression—the air, the breeze, the brightness of the coast
Heart notes add character and emotion—floral or aquatic nuances that soften and deepen the scent
Base notes linger longest—warm, grounding elements that echo memory and place
Inspired by Barafundle Bay
Barafundle Bay is one of those rare places that feels almost unreal.
A secluded, award-winning beach in Pembrokeshire, it’s often described as a “Caribbean-style” paradise. Golden sands meet crystal-clear turquoise waters, sheltered by cliffs and accessible only by a half-mile coastal path from Stackpole Quay. The journey there feels like part of the experience—quiet, unhurried, and full of anticipation.
That sense of discovery and calm became the inspiration for one of our most evocative fragrances.
The Fragrance Journey of Barafundle Bay
This fragrance opens with the feeling of a fresh coastal breeze, as seaweed and sweet ozone drift through the air. It’s bright, clean, and instantly transportive—like standing at the shoreline as the tide shifts.
The scent then unfolds into a floral heart, where delicate cyclamen adds a soft, elegant sweetness, gently lifted by the light, watery freshness of waterlily.
Finally, the fragrance settles into a grounding base of salt-crusted driftwood, warmed by rich amber, earthy patchouli, and deep musk. It’s this foundation that gives the scent its depth and lingering warmth.
The result is a fragrance that feels like renewal—fresh, grounded, and quietly powerful.
Why Places Matter
The Welsh coast is constantly shifting. Light changes the colour of the sea within minutes. Winds reshape the dunes. No two visits feel the same.
That impermanence is exactly what we try to capture in our candles: moments in time, held gently in wax and flame.
Barafundle Bay, with its hidden path and breathtaking reveal, perfectly reflects that philosophy.
Bringing It Home
Every candle we create is an invitation.
An invitation to slow down.
To breathe deeply.
To reconnect with nature—even from indoors.
Because for us, scent is more than fragrance. It’s memory, place, and emotion—distilled.
